How to choose milling cutter?

How to choose milling cutter?

CNC milling cutter is a rotary cutter with one or more cutter teeth for milling. Each cutter teeth in turn intermittently cut off the workpiece allowance during work. Milling cutter is mainly used to process plane, step, groove, forming surface and cutting workpiece on milling machine. In my opinion, when choosing the milling cutter, we should pay attention to both the cutter body and the tool holder.

1. Milling cutter is used on CNC machining center or on ordinary milling machine.

2. Material and hardness of milling cutter.

3. The specifications of milling cutters, such as blade length, full length, blade diameter, handle diameter, etc.

If it is used in CNC machining centers, then the whole cemented carbide should be selected. White steel can be used on ordinary milling machines.

The hardness of white steel milling cutter is softer than that of carbide milling cutter. High-speed steel cutter is cheap and tough, but its strength is not high, it is easy to let the cutter, and its wear resistance and thermal hardness are relatively poor. The thermal hardness of high-speed steel milling cutter is about 600 degrees and its hardness is about 65HRC. It is obvious that when white steel is used to milling hard materials, if the coolant is not in place, it is easy to burn the cutter, which is the origin of low thermal hardness reasons.

Cemented carbide milling cutter has good thermal hardness and wear resistance, but its impact resistance is poor. If you drop the cutter blade, it will break. Cemented carbide is made by powder metallurgy method. Its hardness can reach about 90HRA, and its thermal property can reach about 900-1000 degrees. Therefore, white steel is suitable for ordinary milling machine, alloy milling cutter CNC machining center.

Machining orders

Choosing the diameter of milling cutter can multiply the efficiency of machining order with half the effort.

The selection of milling cutter diameter varies greatly depending on the product and batch production. The selection of cutter diameter mainly depends on the specifications of the equipment and the processing size of the workpiece.

Plane milling cutter

When choosing the diameter of planar milling cutter, the power required by the cutter should be within the power range of the machine tool, and the diameter of the spindle of the machine tool can also be used as the basis for choosing the diameter of the machine tool. The diameter of planar milling cutter can be selected according to D=1.5d (d is the diameter of spindle). In batch production, the tool diameter can also be selected according to 1.6 times the cutting width of the workpiece.

End mill

The selection of end milling cutter diameter should mainly consider the requirement of workpiece processing size and ensure that the required power of the cutter is within the rated power range of the machine tool. If it is a small diameter end milling cutter, it should mainly consider whether the maximum turning speed of the machine tool can reach the minimum cutting speed of the cutter (60m/min).

Slot milling cutter

The diameter and width of groove milling cutter should be selected according to the size of the workpiece, and its cutting power should be within the allowable power range of the machine tool.
