Fiber carbon material VS aluminum material

aluminum VS carbon fiber

Fiber carbon material VS Aluminum alloy material

Most parts of industrial robots are made of 6061 and 7075 aluminium alloys.

The 6000 series of aluminium alloys represented by 6061 have medium strength, good corrosion resistance, weldability and good oxidation effect. The main alloying elements are magnesium and silicon.

The 7000 series aluminium alloys, represented by 7075 model, mainly contain zinc element. They are Al-Mg-Zn-Cu alloys. They are superhard aluminium alloys and heat-treatable alloys. They have good wear resistance and good weldability, but poor corrosion resistance.

Although the hardness of 6061 is not as high as 7075, it has better corrosion resistance, so most robotic arms on the market use this kind of aluminum alloy material.

Carbon fiber is a new kind of high strength and high modulus fiber material with more than 95% carbon content. Carbon fibers are flexible and rigid with outstanding mechanical performance. The tensile strength of carbon fibers is several times that of steel. The density of carbon fibers is only 1.7g/cm3, which is 2/3 of that of aluminium.

Carbon Fiber Fittings reinforced resin composites have many excellent properties. Its specific strength and modulus are relatively high among the existing structural materials. Its electrical conductivity is between non-metal and metal. Its thermal expansion coefficient is very small. Its anti-vibration and energy absorption performance is good. It does not swell in organic solvents, acids and alkalis, and its corrosion resistance is outstanding.

Compared with traditional glass fibers, the Young's modulus of carbon fibers is more than three times that of glass fibers, and about two times that of Kevlar fibers.

The following is the comparative data of the properties of carbon fiber composites and metal materials: carbon fiber composites based on epoxy resin can not only give full play to the characteristics of light weight and high strength of carbon fiber materials, but also have more practical material designability.

Differences between carbon fibers and aluminium alloys (advantages):

1. The price of carbon fibers is more expensive than that of alloys.

2. Carbon fibers are lighter in weight than aluminium alloys, so they are more portable and suitable for carrying.

3. The thermal conductivity of carbon is inferior to that of aluminium alloy.

4. The shock absorption of carbon is better than that of aluminium alloy.

5. The firmness of carbon fibers is not worse than that of alloys.

6.We never worry about rusting problem of Carbon fibers.

7. The acid corrosion resistance of carbon fibers is better than that of alloys.
