Carbon Fiber: Learn about weaving and fabrics

After carbon fibers are manufactured and shaped, they are usually woven into fabrics. To start making fabrics, manufacturers made carbon fiber bundles. The tows are rated according to the content of fibers or filaments, which are usually referred to as 3k, 6k, 12k and 15k. k stands for "thousands", which means that the 3k tow is composed of 3,000 carbon filaments. Since the thickness of a single carbon fiber is only about 5-10 microns, the 3k fiber bundle is only about 0.125 inches thick. Then the 6k tow will be about twice the thickness of the 3k tow, the thickness of the 12k is four times the thickness, and so on. There are a lot of solid carbon fiber in such a compact space, which gives the carbon fiber material incredible strength.

Plain woven or 1x1 woven carbon fiber fabric is symmetrical, similar to a checkerboard. Tow up/down mode weaving provides highly stable and tightly interwoven fibers. Fabric stability refers to the ability of a material to maintain its fiber orientation and weave angle. Because the plain weave carbon fiber fabric has high fabric stability, it is not particularly soft, so it is not suitable for complex contours. However, it is easier to handle without deforming the fabric. Therefore, it is suitable for flat plates, pipes and two-dimensional curves.

Twill weave

Twill weave consists of 2x2 or 4x4 patterns and is the most common type of carbon fiber fabric. In 2x2 weaving, each tow passes through two tows and then two tows. Therefore, it is reasonable to infer that a 4x4 braid consists of tows each passing through four tows and then under the four tows. This up/down weave produces a unique diagonal pattern. The distance between the two rows of twill weave is longer than that of plain weave. Therefore, less curling occurs, thereby reducing the chance of stress points.
